Mississippi is home to the world’s largest model railroad museum – TrainTastic in Gulfport – but that’s just one of the many fun facts about the Magnolia State. From food and music to history and innovation, here are five surprising things that make Mississippi one of a kind.

1. TrainTastic Is the World’s Largest Model Railroad Museum

Mississippi is now home to a record-breaking attraction: TrainTastic, a 50,000-square-foot interactive train museum in Gulfport. It features model railroads in 14 different gauges, LEGO® displays with nearly two million bricks, an outdoor ride-on train, and hands-on activities for kids in its STEAM lab. Families love that it’s fully indoors and all-day admission lets you come and go. Learn more about our Mississippi attraction right in the heart of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

2. Mississippi Raises More Catfish Than Anywhere Else in the U.S.

More than half of all farm-raised catfish in America comes from Mississippi. The Delta’s warm climate and freshwater ponds make it the perfect place to raise catfish, which is why the state even hosts the annual Catfish Festival in Belzoni.

3. Elvis Presley Was Born in Mississippi

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll got his start in Tupelo, Mississippi. The Elvis Presley Birthplace includes the small two-room home where he was born, a museum, and the church where he first sang gospel music. It’s one of the state’s most visited landmarks and a must for any music lover.

4. The Teddy Bear Originated in Mississippi

The story goes that in 1902, President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt refused to shoot a captured bear during a hunting trip near Onward, Mississippi. News of his compassion spread, and toy makers began creating stuffed bears called “Teddy’s Bears.” The rest is history!

5. Mississippi Is the Birthplace of the Blues

From the cotton fields of the Delta to the clubs of Clarksdale, Mississippi is where the blues was born. The Mississippi Blues Trail honors musicians like B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson, with over 200 markers across the state celebrating this world-changing genre.
