What Is the FUN-damentals of Model Railroading Workshop Series?
Looking for things to do in Gulfport that are fun & unique? The FUN-damentals of Model Railroading Workshop Series is a monthly, hands-on class at TrainTastic led by the Mississippi Coast Model Railroad Club. Designed for builders ages 10 and up, this workshop teaches the real basics of model railroading using the same tools, materials, and techniques used by experienced hobbyists.
Workshops are held on the last Saturday of each month and are designed to build skills over time. Each session introduces new techniques while reinforcing what participants have already learned, making the series ideal for beginners and returning builders alike.

New Classics by Bar Mills I
HO Scale | 4.00″ x 2.25″
Builders will assemble a Bar Mills structure kit from start to finish. This session focuses on foundational skills such as parts identification, clean assembly, proper adhesive use, and basic surface detailing. It is an excellent introduction to working with small-scale model structures.

Modeling Basics: Scenery 1.0
Builders will learn the fundamentals of scenery and terrain creation. Participants will shape landforms, apply ground cover, and explore textures and color techniques that bring layouts to life. This session introduces the core concepts behind realistic landscapes.

Modeling Basics: Scenery 1.1 – Trees
This workshop builds on February’s terrain work and focuses on creating realistic trees. Builders will learn tree construction methods, placement techniques, and how scale and spacing affect realism. Vertical elements are added to complete scenic scenes.

New Classics by Bar Mills II
HO Scale | 5.25″ x 2.65″
Builders will assemble a larger Bar Mills structure kit and apply more advanced assembly and alignment techniques. This session introduces layered details, textures, and finishing methods that add depth and realism to model buildings.

HO Scale | 5.00″ x 2.00″
This workshop focuses on service-style structures and storytelling through modeling. Builders will practice weathering techniques, add signage and detail elements, and learn how visual wear and aging help tell a story within a layout.

New Classics by Bar Mills IV
HO Scale | 4.00″ x 3.00″
This capstone workshop brings everything together. Builders will assemble the final structure in the series and apply cumulative skills from previous sessions. The focus is on advanced detailing and finishing touches to complete a polished, display-ready model.
